Alicante and the Costa Blanca are known as one of the healthiest places in Europe to live and buy property and as a result have always been popular with Northern Europeans as a place to holiday or retire.

With its mountainous interior and sandy white beaches, the province of Alicante has something for just about anyone and its variety of available activities and pastimes reflect in its popularity today. The natural landscape, marinas and beaches provide the perfect backdrop to a truly cosmopolitan destination.

With airports all across Europe linking to Alicante as well as the other major airports of the coastal area, getting to and living in Alicante couldn’t be easier. The airport is extremely well connected and even for those traveling to this part of Spain from outside of the European community, finding connecting flights in and out of the area is generally very easy. Likewise, the excellent train and bus network ensures that finding your way around once here is equally as easy. Should you wish to travel further a field within the country the high-speed train network is fast and punctual and not prohibitively expensive.

property in spainThe sea trade resulting from Alicante's strategic location is what makes the city one of Spain largest and busiest ports. It is this reason that has made Alicante such an important point of interest to all of its previous inhabitants, including the Romans who ruled the area for over 700 years. It wasn’t actually until the 1240’s that the Castilians regained control of Spain following spells under both Visigoth and Arab rule. Today, the port is just as important to the region, even if much of the heavy cargo has been replaced by pleasure craft and private yachts.

Alicante’s industry today does rely heavily on tourism and external sources taking advantage of the superb temperate climate that has gained Alicante such notoriety. But other industry such as toy production, citrus fruit farming and dried fruits also play a significant and valued part in the local economy. Likewise, the retail sector is buoyant here too, not only due to the foreigners and their dispensable incomes, but also due to the smaller local industries and retailers. The addition of the Panoramis Centro Commercial near to the port as well as the larger stores in the Avenida Maison Nave (including El Corte Ingles) or the San Fernando area, in the newer part of town, underlines this.

It’s hard to think of Alicante without remembering its excellent sporting facilities, and probably most importantly Golf. There are around 14 courses to choose from in the area and the golf economy is very lucrative indeed. It’s not surprising that much of the tourism generated here is made up of so many sport enthusiasts, as apart from the golf courses, there are many other outdoor activities available. The area is big on water sports, sailing and the likes, as well as theme and water parks that makes this an ideal location for the whole family.
