Malaga has seen unbelievable amounts of change over the past few years, all of which came about when the original jet-set started visiting in the 70's. On arriving at the airport in Malaga now, it's hard to believe that those years ago, you arrived at what resembled a tin hut on the side of the runway and picked out your suitcase before you went off on hours of twisty windy roads.
There is today a huge amount of life in Malaga province, maybe because it was one of the first areas to benefit from development, but in quieter areas the beaches and tiny coves remain pretty much unspoiled even today. Out of the city, there is a corner for everyone with the traditional small original white villages like Alozaina, Coin, Alhaurin, Alora, Casarabonela, and historical Ronda hide in the mountains beyond the Costa de Sol. As a contrast, in the plains beyond Antequera, flat and fertile agricultural areas still fall under the jurisdictions of the Province and sprawl like a huge patchwork quilt across the land.

Malaga is the major coastal city of Andalucia and sits as the gateway to the Costa del Sol. Pablo Picasso was born in 1881 in the city which now houses the headquarters of the Picasso Foundation. The Malagueños love their food, so bars and restaurants are key to the Malaga regions popularity. Tapas, small portions of many different dishes is an Andalusian tradition and a wonderfully inexpensive way to try a variety of local food. The park on Calle Alameda houses an impressive botanical collection and has open air concerts every Sunday. La Alcazaba a fortress that dates back to the 700s, although much of the structure belongs to the mid 11th century, is now a fascinating archaeological museum.
Malaga is reminiscent of going to Skegness as a child, like a breath of fresh air but always with the summer holidays hanging over it. And for that reason, you always feel like you're on holiday no matter what the occasion. It still feels fresh, vibrant and almost new when you walk around a corner to discover what's been there for years looks different just because of the sunlight today, or the blossom that's budding on the trees.
Malaga can be what you want it to be, a coffee bar in a classy side street or a nightclub on a back street. You can be who and what you want and nobody notices. In Malaga you're free.
